Epic Games has confirmed that it's not working on a new Unreal Tournament first-person shooter, as it's focusing on Fortnite and a few other unannounced projects.

Unreal Tournament put Epic Games on the map in terms of shooters and amazed a world back in the early 2000s.

The series received a new title in the form of Unreal Tournament 3, but it didn't have the same amount of success, so Epic decided to focus on bigger series like Gears of War.

Now, after confirming more details about its new Unreal Engine 4 technology, the studio's boss, Tim Sweeney, has revealed that a new Unreal Tournament isn't in development at the large independent company.

"We have a lot of nostalgia for the game but we're actually not developing anything in the Unreal game universe at all at the moment," he said, via CVG.

Sweeney has emphasized that Epic is currently focusing on Fortnite, its ambitious UE4-powered survival game, but also on quite a few different unannounced projects that are also built using Unreal Engine 4.

Considering the impact Unreal Tournament as a franchise had on the industry as a whole and the first-person shooter genre in particular, it's a shame that the series is lying dormant instead of being developed into a new experience.
