Digital downloads have become one of today's most important content delivery vehicles, and the prospects for the future are even more positive. However, there are quite a lot of users out there whose computer literacy levels don't allow them to take full advantage of this next-generation delivery method,
and this is the reason why the Envive company has announced the TheaterStation, a media server that is supposed to be extremely easy to use while still providing a high level of functionality.
"We're really excited about the TheaterStation. For the first time, users will have access to a media player which has generally been reserved for high profile home theaters," stated Chris Bortner, CEO of Envive, Inc. "A considerable amount of development time has been spent ensuring that the TheaterStation would perform to enthusiast standards but would be no more difficult to connect and use than a standard DVD Player."
Unfortunately, despite of Mr. Bortner's statement, the company provides relatively little technical specs regarding the TheaterStation. Thus, they do inform us that the device uses Envive's Spin User Interface which allows users to navigate through content stored on the device in a fast and easy manner. Furthermore, Envive states that the device is capable of playing back of High Definition content over HDMI, DVI and Component video outputs as well as providing direct (SPDIF) audio output to any surround sound processor.
Moreover, the TheaterStation is supposed to be able to hold around 200 hours or more of DVD quality video, but it seems that users are also allowed to add extra-storage for up to 2000 hours of storage. The device also lets users view and archive movies simultaneously and comes packed with fully-featured parental controls with PassKey Access.
The company has also announced a new partnership with MusicGiants' video branch (VideoGiants), which will allow them to provide both pre-loaded HD content as well as the ability to purchase HD audio and video through TheaterStation's User Interface. Unfortunately, the TheaterStation is available for now solely for pre-orders, starting at around 2495.99 US dollars.
