It’s undeniably one of the biggest and most beloved movie franchises of all times and soon, fans will also be able to enjoy it in 3D: the entire “Star Wars” saga is being converted and will see re-release.All six films will be converted from the traditional format to 3D and will be released in theaters at the pace of one movie per year, it has been confirmed.
Work on the first release is already heavily underway, with “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” being scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2012,
ScreenCrave reports.
“There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the ‘Star Wars Saga’ has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive,” Lucas Films says in a statement, confirming the happy news.
Those thinking of arguing that 3D is not excellent 3D if post-production conversion is the case would better refrain from doing so: “Star Wars” will be the exception.
Amidst raised concerns that
3D is going downhill because too many films shot in 2D are being converted to 3D to sell premium tickets, Lucas Films promises this will not be the case here.
It is precisely why preparing the saga for re-release will take so long, because no one has any intention of spoiling this for fans.
“Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right,” John Knoll, Visual Effects Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic, says in the same statement.
“It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results,” Knoll explains.
“For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience,” Knoll adds.
As also noted above, the first “Star Wars” film in 3D arrives in theaters in 2012, with one new film being released each year.
