A report shows that assumptions are far from the reality

Gabriel Consulting Group recently conducted a survey to precisely establish the discrepancies between the actual security measures that guard an organization and the perception of the directors regarding the subject.

147 enterprises were subject to a set of questions that were designed to determine what is the reality and what is believed by the board.

60% of data center security managers reveal their bosses believe that the protection is actually stronger than it actually is. Nearly half claim that they're constantly discovering new holes that present a danger to the company and more than 40% admit that it's a hard task keeping up with all the threats.

“It’s astounding that almost two-thirds of our respondents say that their management is in the dark about their true security status,” stated Dan Olds, principal analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group.

“This is something that should cause a lot of thought both in the executive suite and in the data center. Management needs to seek out the truth when it comes to IT security, and data center management needs to be frank and honest when discussing the strengths and weaknesses of their security mechanisms. Obviously, it’s far better to discuss potential security issues before they’re exposed by a breach.”

McAfee, who commissioned the report, thinks that in most cases the security staff incorrectly handles the migration to cloud-based systems and that's what represents the source of most loopholes.

The fact that in only 22% of the cases, administration is aware of the weak spots is alarming, highlighting the fact that traditional security models need to be upgraded in order to provide the proper safekeeping for clouds and data centers.

“The move to virtualized data center requires organizations to consider their approach to security early in the design cycle,” revealed Greg Brown, vice president of Network Security at McAfee.

“Using network and system security solutions that are optimized for virtualized environments ensures continuity of data center operations, without interfering with performance. McAfee's solutions provide seamless security management across conventional and virtualized data center resources.”
