This could be the future for all those looking to enjoy all the flavors of a full meal without packing on the pounds: breathing in food instead of actually eating it. The device making this possible is called a Le Whaf Machine and will go on sale in France this year.

Daily Mail correspondent Laura Powell traveled to Paris to try out Le Whaf and have a talk with its creator, Professor David Edwards, 49, who admits he first came up with the idea as he was trying to invent new ways of experiencing food and drinks.

If his name rings a bell, it’s because he’s already sold another similar product, the so-called Le Whif, a tube looking very much like lipstick that is used in the same manner like an asthma pump but that is filled instead with coffee, chocolate or vitamins.

Le Whaf is much more complex than that, Powell explains, since it can turn into breathable vapors anything from strong alcoholic drinks (like whiskey) to real food, like tomato soup and lemon pies.

Powell tried out the lemon pie – and she vouches that the experience is very similar to the real deal, the only difference being that she was completely famished at the end of it.

As far as flavors go though, there was really not much to differentiate breathing the pie from actually eating it, she says.

Plus, she only ingested about 200 calories every 10 minutes of using the machine, which is considerably less than what she would have consumed had she eaten a full meal.

This is also why Le Whaf is being hailed as potentially a hit with dieters. “It’s good for dieters,” the Professor underlines, adding that this is just one of the many advantages of the machine.

“It’s great fun, too. Plus, it’s an amuse bouche, a conversation starter. It’s a way of savoring the flavor of alcoholic drinks without getting drunk. Most of all, it’s a way for foodies to savor flavors,” the Professor explains.

At this moment, there are only two Le Whaf machines in the world. Professor Edwards will start selling his invention in France this year, and it will cost less than £85, which, again, is a guarantee that it will be a hit.
