Enigmatic David Lynch Crowned at Venice

The lifetime achievement award for the 'wacky' director

At 60-year-old, the enigmatic American director has become the youngest person ever to get the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He was awarded the distinction for his lifetime achievement, that boasts such realizations as the hit television series 'Twin Peaks' and the 2001 mind-twisting 'Mulholland Drive'.

The fans gathered to see their favorite director ever and the entire press representatives also took the opportunity of asking Lynch about his first movie in the past five years, a three-hour long drama called 'Inland Empire'.

Unfortunately, as mysterious and as fond of unexpected turns-of-events as Lynch is in all his works, as a person, he is very predictable in only one sense: he will always refuse to talk in clarifying terms about his work. All that he was willing to reveal about 'Inland Empire' was that it is, quote, 'a dark tale [of] a movie within a movie, in which [the viewer is taken] through the nightmarish labyrinth of the inner life of a Hollywood actress. [It is] a story of a woman in love who is in danger'.

'Inland Empire' was shot in England and Poland and it brings a few new elements to what we usually get from David Lynch's movies: at the beginning, it was shot without a script, with the director writing the lines the very same day that shooting was scheduled to take place, and some of the songs included on its soundtrack were written and performed by Lynch himself.

The cast includes Laura Dern (who is also co-producer), Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux and Harry Dean Stanton. 'Inland Empire' will premiere Saturday during the Venice Film Festival, outside of competition, on the last day of festivities.
