One might wonder if the technology isn't already advanced enough

The 4K ultra-high definition image standard (3840 x 2160 pixels 4K resolution) has only been around for a few months, but already display makers are considering enhancement.

Never mind that the specification is already the farthest ahead of the curve.

Anyway, a report says that in 2014, and maybe even this year, Ultra HD TV panels will start to use wide color gamut (WCG) technology, bringing color saturation to NTSC 100%.

Panel makers also intend to implement glasses-free 3D technology at some point.

And since television sets have been stealing the thunder of multimedia players, I wouldn't be surprised to see them all turned into Smart TVs.

Sony and VIZIO will be among the first to experiment, likely before the year is out, provided their supplier AU Optronics (AUO) will produce on time UHD TV panels with all these assets.
