Out of the many, many maps that I've seen this far this is one of the best and most useful. Not to me as I am not a resident of Tokyo, but I'm certain that for the tourists it's going to be a gold mine.
Why did I mention the tourists? Because this map also has a special tab where the top places to visit while you're in that particular area are shown and taking into consideration that it's the capital of Japan we're talking about, the list is huge. It goes from fish markets, runs through gardens, hotels, towers and it ends with all the museums listed there.
It also plots the shortest transit rout from one station to the other giving alternatives and times of travel as you can see in the picture on the left. The adding of videos to Google Maps has also been used thoroughly, many such videos being available when scrolling through the
Tokyo Subway Transit Map Tool, as it is called and even some of the non-Google services have been used in order to give the viewers a better and more complete understanding of the places they will be visiting. Would you have thought to see photos from Flickr on a Google based map? I certainly wouldn't have because there's Picasa and using it would have made a little more sense.
The drawing of the routes is clear and you really can't miss them in the maze of kanji. The colors are definitely appealing to the eye and it is an overall good experience. Other maps that focus on the same thing have not been worked on as much and, sadly enough, it shows. But fret not, future tourists of Tokyo! It's your for the grabbing and obsessive use. The good part? It doesn't rumple like the ones made out of paper.
