Researchers with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, and colleagues from the Pennsylvania State University determined in a new study that teens and young adults are more likely to consume alcohol mixed with energy drinks.

This combination is significantly worse for the human body than drinking alcohol alone, but can also pose some risks to the community as well. The research group found in their analysis of 652 college students that mixing vodka or whiskey shots with energy drinks is becoming increasingly popular.

This leads to young adults being wide awake drunk at all hours, something that puts a tremendous strain on their bodies, and particularly their hearts. Details of how this occurs are published in the latest issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, e! Science News reports.

“We found that college students tended to drink more heavily and become more intoxicated on days they used both energy drinks and alcohol, compared to days they only used alcohol,” says U-M expert Megan Patrick, the leader of the investigation.
