Oh boy, oh boy... which one should I play? That will be the question asked by many Linux gamers, when both Unreal Tournament 3 and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be fully available on the market. However, it looks like Quake Wars has just got an advantage, as the demo client was made available last night for the general public. Therefore, today we will take a quick look at this demo client of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and we will learn some interesting facts about it!

What is Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is the ultimate online strategic first-person shooter, set in the Quake Universe. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars offers the following hot new features to players:

It also features self-shadowing and an HDR-like "Bloom" effect.

How to install Enemy Territory: Quake Wars?

Now that you've learned some interesting facts about Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, I bet you are anxious to give it a try. Aren't you? Well, first things first: you should know the minimum hardware and software requirements for this game. They are as follows:

Minimum Hardware Requirements:

? Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or Athlon XP 2000+ processor ? 512 MB RAM ? nVidia GeForce 5700 (except LE and VE) ? ATI Radeon 9700

Minimum Software Requirements:

? Kernel 2.6, configured for 1000Hz tick and other low latency settings ? SDL >= 1.2 (>= 1.2.10 recommended) ? latest OpenGL drivers - correctly configured! ? OpenAL

Of course that you will also need a broadband Internet connection (TCP/IP) for online and LAN play. Now do the following:

1. Download the demo client of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars now from Softpedia.

Beware that the file is a torrent and you should use a BitTorrent client such as Transmission, Deluge or KTorrent in order to download it.

When the download is finished, you'll end up with a .run file, called ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run on your home folder or where you have chosen to download the file.

2. You must open a terminal now: hit ALT+F2 and type konsole, if you use the KDE desktop, or type gnome-terminal if you use the GNOME desktop. CD to the folder where you have downloaded the .run file and type:

chmod +x ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run
then type:

./ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run
to run the installer. You'll see a welcome screen with some basic instructions and system requirements about Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

3. Hit "Next" and you will see a license agreement, hit "Next" again and agree with the license. Then you will see another license agreement, hit "Next" and accept this one too.

4. Enter the path where the files will be installed:

/home/yourusername/ETQW
Of course that you should replace yourusername with your username (e.g. /home/softpedia). Wait for the files to be copied to that path and you will be notified when the installation is over. Hit "OK".

5. Create a shortcut on your desktop or go to the folder where you've installed Quake Wars and double click on the etqw file to start the game.

We have tested Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on a Ubuntu 7.10 machine with an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ with 1GB RAM and an nVidia GeForce 6 video card. Here some screenshots from our tests:
