Keepers at ZooParc de Beauval have announced that, on November 12, a baby Malayan tapir was born at this facility. Vets have had the chance to examine it and say that it is a male. As far as they could tell, it is perfectly healthy.

Zoo Borns tells us that the tapir calf was born to mother Florales. Zoo employees say that this female has delivered many offspring before, which is why they are sure it will have no trouble looking after the zoo's latest arrival.

For the time being, the calf doesn't really look like its mother. However, keepers say that it will get rid of its dappled coat and get a solid-colored one instead in about eight or nine months.

Malayan tapirs are currently considered an endangered species. Some time ago, they could be found all over Southeast Asia. However, humans have destroyed a large portion of their habitat, and the species is now confined to the Malay Peninsula and the island of Sumatra.
