Yesterday's confirmed UK data loss which put the information of about 25 million Britons at risk attracts more and more comments from the security vendors from all over the world which obviously fight for better security for digital material. After Sophos and McAfee, the first two companies which came out to talk about the disaster, David Nortier, Managing Director, EMEA, Signiant, today said that a simple security measure such as data encryption could easily prevent the
data loss and keep all the details secure. Moreover, the Signiant official believes that traditional mail delivery is no longer a solution for distributing so important information copied on discs since there are numerous ways to keep the entire process digital and in addition, protect the data with very powerful technologies.
"If there was ever a compelling argument for secure digital delivery, this is it. Safeguards like encryption, authorization and user authentication within a properly managed digital media distribution management system make mistakes like this very hard to make," said David Nortier, Managing Director, EMEA, Signiant. "Maybe this incident will make people realize that untracked, unaudited postal delivery of sensitive documents and files is not a way to do business."
Certainly, sending the information through a digital method could protect the Britons details but nobody can guarantee that they could reach the destination without being intercepted by somebody else. There were too many web attacks and attempts to steal information which could easily prove us that our content is in danger every time it leaves our computer.
In fact, the data can be threatened even if it is stored locally as the attackers are very often attempting to hack the systems and access the material available on HDDs. But when it comes to losing the information of about 25 million UK residents, a problem encountered by a department which should be trusted by the Britons, the matter is pretty serious and it can easily become dangerous as malicious people can use the details to conduct credit card fraud and identity theft.
