It’s hard to imagine a cop flick / heist thriller starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Liam Hemsworth, and Emma Roberts could not get a theatrical release, but this is precisely the case with “Empire State,” whose first trailer is embedded above in full.

Based on true events, the story of a heist in 1982, the largest cash robbery ever at the time (the thieves got away with $11 million / €8.3 million), the film is directed by Dito Montiel and will be out on September 3 this year.

It will go straight to DVD, probably because the studio has lost faith in Montiel, whose most recent outing, “The Son of No One,” barely registered with moviegoers.

“Empire State” stars Hemsworth as a security guard who tips a friend on how to steal the money he’s supposed to be guarding, while Johnson plays the cop that’s after him.

Emma Roberts is in a supporting role, as also is Michael Angarano.
