Unlike in previous years, last night’s 2014 edition of the Emmy Awards didn’t include an elaborate musical number for the kickoff, but it did feature the next best thing: Weird Al Yankovic putting his own spin on some of the most popular theme songs on TV right now.

Weird Al, who has built for himself a very successful and time-enduring career out of parodying the works of famous artists and released a new album this year, was invited to work his magic on the theme songs for some of the most nominated series at the gala, including “Scandal,” “Mad Men,” “Homeland,” and of course, “Game of Thrones.”

The result was a weird and funny performance that included lots of backup dancers and lyrics like “Jon Hamm’s never won an Emmy,/ Oh who cares he’s still Jon freaking Hamm,” during the reinvented “Mad Men” theme song.

Saving the best for last, during the now very famous “Game of Thrones” theme song, Weird Al was joined on stage by Andy Samberg as Prince Joffrey. Together, they urged George R.R. Martin, the author of the novels on which the series is based, to “type faster” because they “need more scripts.”

To better drive the point across, they even had someone put an old-fashioned typewriter in Martin’s lap, which, considering how many times he’s said he hates it when people try to rush him like that into finishing the novels quicker, I assume wasn’t entirely appreciated.

Check out Weird Al’s entire number in the video below, and of course, enjoy!
