For the first time since it started airing, first on BBC One and then on PBS Masterpiece, “Sherlock” won an Emmy at last night’s awards show, airing live on NBC from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Make that 3 Emmys.

The series won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie (Benedict Cumberbatch), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie (Martin Freeman), and Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special, writer-producer Steve Moffat, for “His Last Vow.”

Because neither Cumberbatch nor Freeman were in attendance, Moffat picked up their awards, as well as his own. As tumblr and Twitter were going crazy with joy that a big time fan-favorite was finally getting the recognition it deserved, Moffat dropped a bomb on reporters backstage.

That’s right, if you didn’t know, “Sherlock” has a huge following online. On tumblr, for instance, the series is such a hit that Moffat admitted to EW after his win that he didn’t even dared to go online there, for fear of what he might find.

He also promised that the upcoming 4th season would top anything we’ve seen already in the previous 3. He didn’t say what he meant by that, but it sure sounds like it’s not good.

“We have a plan to top it. And I do think our plan is devastating. We’ve practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan… we’re probably more excited that we’ve ever been about Sherlock,” Moffat revealed.

Dare to venture a guess on who might die or what bad things might befall the good friends, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson? For the time being, that’s all we have to hold on to.

Moffat also admitted that he had come to the Emmys not even thinking they’d win anything. “I didn’t think we’d win anything. I’m a bit worried about rewinding and seeing my speech… we were just starting to think that phase [of getting awards attention] was dying down… hopefully more people will watch it.”

Season 4 of “Sherlock” goes into production sometime in 2015 and will air only the year after that, in 2016. However, fans don’t have to wait that long until they’re reunited with their favorite crime-solving duo, because producers have also announced a Christmas special that will air in 2015.

This one starts shooting in January 2015, so perhaps more details will emerge then. BBC One has also been teasing fans on social media, hinting that Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty will return – with a vengeance, of course.
