As the video above will confirm, Michael Douglas ended his Emmys 2013 acceptance speech by mentioning his legally troubled son Cameron and saying he hoped he would get to see him soon. He explained that backstage, in a chat with EW.

Douglas won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for “Behind the Candelabra.” His eldest son is a drug addict imprisoned on drug trafficking charges.

He’s recently been caught smuggling drugs behind bars and, according to the actor, he’s been thrown in solitary confinement – and pretty much forgotten there.

“My son is in federal prison. He’s been a drug addict for a large part of his life. Part of the punishments — if you happen to have a slip, and this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent, as about a half-million of our drug-addicted prisoners are — he’s spent almost two years in solitary confinement. Right now I’ve been told that I can’t see him for two years. It’s been over a year now. And I’m questioning the system,” Michael told the press.

“Obviously at first, I was certainly disappointed in my son. But I’ve reached a point now where I’m very disappointed with the system,” he continued.

He added that non-violent drug addicts should not be treated in a similar fashion as violent offenders once behind bars.
