“He was not perfect,” but this is what makes him so relatable, “Glee” co-star recalls

Since the TV Academy announced that 1 of the 5 tributes at the Emmys 2013 would be for Cory Monteith, who died this year of a drug overdose, many have been saying he did not deserve such an honor. His “Glee” co-star Jane Lynch is among those who disagree.

Above is her beautiful speech for the In Memoriam segment dedicated to Cory.

As it turns out, the Emmys producers did think this through, turning the tribute into a platform to raise awareness on drug addiction.

This was one of the biggest complaints against Monteith’s inclusion, that he would be praised for his acting and not a word would be said about the reason he’d died.

“Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to, his death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction. Tonight we remember Cory for all he was, and mourn the loss of all he could have been,” Jane said.

“To a generation that loved Cory so, please know, this gifted and wonderful young man was worthy of your love. And if you were lucky enough to know Cory as we did, and witness firsthand Cory’s goofy, breezy sense of humor, his natural instinct for inclusiveness, and his unbridled sense of generosity day in and day out, I promise, you’d have loved him even more,” she added.
