Just the other day, Sofia Coppola’s highly mediated “The Bling Ring” with Emma Watson as lead screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In a new interview with W Magazine, the actress talks about the challenges of the role, but also about what it was like to grow up in the spotlight.

The stunning actress explains that she was always a very serious child so, when she decided she wanted the part of Hermione in “Harry Potter,” she set out to do audition after audition until she got it right.

She would read lines and record herself while doing it, watch them afterwards and then do it all over again. Even today, she’s amazed at how much she’s always loved learning lines.

“I was always a very serious child. I remember being 13 and girls in my class saying, ‘So-and-so is going to kiss so-and-so on the school fields.’ I said, ‘That’s stupid. They’re too young for it to matter – he doesn’t love her, and that’s just a waste of time’,” Emma recalls for the publication.

“It’s amazing that I had any friends! [Laughs] So I was the right child to get cast: I loved the responsibility,” she adds.

Even though she knew from the start acting was in her blood and a career in the spotlight in the future for her, she says she also made sure she got a proper life outside of that.

Her first kiss wasn’t on camera, she says.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Elizabeth Taylor, and I had read that her first kiss happened on a film set, which actually made me a little sad. You need to have normal experiences of your own,” Emma shares.

“I’ve never wanted to grow up too fast: I wanted to wear a sports bra until I was 22! The allure of being sexy never really held any excitement for me. I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman,” she adds.

The actress also goes into the details of her role in “The Bling Ring” and how she always looks for parts that provide new experiences for her, that challenge her, that help her grow as an artist.
