Advanced Micro Devices makes a point of having the more versatile multi-display technology, shown in how it implemented something of the sort in the latest embedded, entry-level GPU.

While low-end graphics processing units, like those used in HTPCs and the embedded market, aren't expected to have powerful specs, there is one feature that can help.

The ability to handle more than one monitor at once can be a boon both in multimedia and in business, enterprise or industrial tasks, since it boosts productivity.

Knowing this, Advanced Micro Devices built the E6460 discrete graphics processor for the embedded segment.

Essentially, it is a subset of the stronger Radeon E6760, which means system designers can make machines that have both of them working together.

It has a multi-display technology superior to the generic Eyefinity through the fact that, instead of just 3, four monitors are supported.

The BGA package includes 512 MB of GDDR5 VRAM and the third generation UVD (unified video decoder), which can decode two streams of HD video at the same time, encoded in H.264, VC-1, MPEG4 or MPEG2 formats.

AMD gave the newcomer support for HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2, as well as for DirectX 11 (obviously).

“The AMD Radeon E6460 GPU provides the high value, small footprint, and long supply demanded by embedded customers,” said Richard Jaenicke, director of Embedded Client Business for AMD.

“With a footprint-compatible subset of the high-performance AMD E6760 GPU, the new AMD Radeon E6460 GPU enables broadly scalable graphics and multimedia performance in a single board design.”

Planned supply availability for the Radeon E6460 is five years, during which time it should successfully land inside such applications as digital signage solutions, casino gaming, industrial control systems and instrumentation.

The official release was done during the Embedded Systems Conference East, which is taking place in Boston, from September 26 to 29.
