Katy Perry performed “Hot N Cold” on Sesame Street, got banned because of her dress

Parents thought Katy Perry’s recent appearance on Sesame Street was a bit too much (or too little, depending on how one looks at it) because of the cleavage on her green mini-dress. Elmo would like to disagree.

As we also informed you the other day, footage that Perry shot for an episode that should have aired on New Year’s Eve ended up online, on YouTube, and got parents very hot under the collar.

They objected to Katy’s choice of an outfit for a children’s program, saying her cleavage was too much – which eventually prompted producers to cut the bit from the episode and pull the video altogether.

In Katy’s defense, there is at least one red Muppet out there who doesn’t feel the same: the singer’s play date in the video, Elmo, as E! Online informs.

Elmo and Katy did E!’s Daily 10 and talked a bit about the appearance, with the Muppet coming to side with the pop star in the recent scandal.

“She sings so well... and she’s so pretty. We’re talking about her and she’s smiling,” Elmo says.

“I sang ‘Hot N Cold’ because Elmo told me he wanted to play. Play dress up, but then he wanted to run away. So I couldn’t really tell, so I thought ‘Hot N Cold’ was appropriate for our visit,” Katy also says of why she chose that particular song for the show.

While no one objected to the song (perhaps because it was a clean version of the original hit), many took offense to Katy’s dress, saying it was not appropriate for the show because she was literally bursting out of it.

Producers listened to the cries of outrage online and then decided the best way to approach the matter was to cut the clip – and pull it from YouTube as well, where it drew lots of negative comments.

The conservative Parents Television Council applauded the move, after calling the cameo in a previous statement a “disturbing” thing, E! says.

“While there is no doubt that Ms. Perry is an extremely popular performer today, the reality is that millions of families place their unbridled trust in Sesame Street as a source of age-appropriate entertainment for their children and grandchildren,” PTC President Tim Winter says.

“We are grateful to Sesame Workshop for their prudent action in this matter,” the same statement reads.
