Kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart has given an interview to NBC, as she is promoting her new memoir, “My Story.” She has offered more information about her captivity and the way she helped police get to her.

According to NY Daily News, she was once approached by an officer while she was being held in California by Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee.

She was asked if she was Elizabeth but, as her assailant stood beside her, she froze. She was being threatened with her death and the murder of her entire family, so she never gave out any information. During her 9-month-long captivity, she was being chained, tied to a tree and raped almost daily.

Smart managed to facilitate her escape by convincing her captors to move back to the state of Utah, where she had been taken from.

Since they were never found in California, they were considering moving to New York or Boston. After they traveled to Salt Lake City, she showed them photos of missing children in a Walmart store.

None of the pictures was hers, and she talked them into staying there. However, residents recognized her and her kidnappers were soon detained.
