Get the latest Elive version from Softpedia

Elive, a complete operating system for your computer, built on top of Debian GNU/Linux, has advanced to version 2.3.6 Beta and is available for download and testing.

The Elive developers usually work to implement lots of changes and improvements in the Beta branch of the operating system before releasing a stable version. This is true for the current release, which is just yet another step towards the final build.

The development cycle seems to follow a tight schedule, and from what we've seen so far, a new release is made almost on a monthly basis. It's impossible to deduce when a new stable version will become available, but it can't be too far out into the future.

Elive never blocks

"You can do things like to write simple documents or make professional video editing, being multitasking you can launch any applications at the same time without blocking. Thus Elive never blocks, never has virus and never destroys your data due to unacceptable errors. The system is so customizable that you can change entirely its behaviour and automate tasks in any desired way."

"Elive is extremely fast because it consumes minimal resources and it is highly optimized. You can even run Elive in your oldest computer transforming it back to a powerful workstation, so imagine how fast it will run on your newer computer! We use for that the most lightweight combination of applications, libraries, and techniques to build a very responsive and optimized system," say the devs on the official website.

According to the changelog, the configured network connections are now persistent on reboot for USB Images, the USB bootable image has been improved by creating a separate partition, Elive now boots with a new Splash theme, the listing of kernels on the boot screen has been improved, memtest has been added to the boot screen, and SSH between Elive computers is now much faster.

Where to get Elive

The makers of Elive also say that the Beta versions are not as optimized as the Stable ones due to debug flags and developer profiles, so it's very likely that you will encounter various bugs and problems. Also likely is that the final version of this distro will be out pretty soon.

More details about this distribution can be found in the official announcement. You can download Elive 2.3.6 Beta right now from Softpedia. It might seem like a stable release and it might just as well be, but it's still marked as Beta and it should be treated as such. Don't use it on any production machines.
