Though he swore off marriage in an interview from earlier this year, George Clooney would have made an excellent son-in-law, Elisabetta Canalis’ parents say, finally opening up about the recent split that shocked showbiz.

George and Elisabetta ended their 2-year romance a short while ago and, while she’s keeping mum on the topic, her parents are a bit more generous with the details.

In a new interview with an Italian publication, they reveal that their daughter is heartbroken that things didn’t work out between herself and Hollywood’s hottest bachelor, Us Magazine reports.

“The 32-year-old Italian model ‘is very down in the dumps,’ her mother, Bruna, tells the Italian edition of Vanity Fair. ‘I’ve spoken to her, and she is very sad, but these things happen’,” the publication writes.

Elisabetta’s parents would have liked to welcome him officially into the family, even if they didn’t really care for the attention that he always got from the media.

“He is a nice guy, good fun,” Elisabetta’s father Cesare says of first meeting Clooney last year.

“We had a good time, but there was a lot of attention and we are not used to it,” Cesare adds.

Still, Clooney would have probably made an excellent son-in-law, the Canalis believe. “He certainly would have made a good son-in-law, but it’s my daughter who has to decide,” the say.

Hopeful romantics may still harbor some hope that Elisabetta and George could reconcile, but the aforementioned magazine says that chances of that happening are slim to none: she’s already moved out of the house they shared.

“Italian Vanity Fair also reports that Canalis recently stopped by Clooney’s Villa Oleandra home in Lake Como to clear out her things. ‘She had her dog with her and was smoking a lot,’ one witness said,” Us Magazine reports.

Neither George nor Elisabetta has addressed the reasons behind the breakup, but word online has it that he still didn’t want to get married, while she would have liked to do so sometime in the future.

Maybe George is just a good ol' Kentucky boy at heart and couldn't handle his girlfriend giving a free show of her goodies--you know so every man out there got to see what he felt like only he should see.
