Co-host and comedian get into nasty war of words over past offenses

Elisabeth Hasselbeck can't stand comedian Bill Maher and she doesn't want to make a secret of it. The other day, Maher was a guest on The View and the co-host snapped at him the entire time he sat next to her on the couch.

Video of the interview is below and, as you can very well see for yourself, it was beyond awkward at times.

Elisabeth first lashed out at Maher, who has quite a reputation for his sometimes offensive cracks, shortly after the interview started, telling him she wanted to ask him something about a joke he made in February 2010.

Back then, when the details of Lara Logan's capture by protesters in Egypt hadn't yet aired on US television, Maher made a joke about her and Hasselbeck.

“Now that Mubarak has released Lara Logan, he must put her intrepid hotness on a plane immediately. In exchange, we'll send Elisabeth Hasselbeck,” he said.

Saying she spoke for every woman in the world, Elisabeth pointed out to Maher that the joke wasn't funny even if he didn't know what exactly happened to Logan in the riots-torn country.

In return, the comedian tried to point out that he wasn't singling out Elisabeth as an individual, only to be told he didn't know when and where to draw the line.

“Well, we do a comedy show for an audience that's perhaps different than your audience and you are a public figure. It was not aimed at you personally, but when you're a public figure you're out there for fodder for comedians to make comments on you,” he told Elisabeth.

Later on in the interview, a visibly irked Maher told Hasselbeck he wouldn't make the joke again if he knew he'd have to do an entire interview on The View about it.

“If I knew I was coming here and knew I had to spend my entire segment talking about it, no, I wouldn't,” were his exact words.

Elisabeth wouldn't let it rest, though, even when it became clear that Maher wasn't happy with discussing over and over again the same issue.

“Wow, I actually feel smarter sitting next to you,” she told him later in the show. To this, Maher quipped back, “Really? I feel like I'm in high school when I'm sitting next to you.”
