Conservationists say 36,000 African elephants were slaughtered in 2012 alone

By now, it's no news that poachers are killing lots of elephants, thus driving the species closer and closer to extinction.

According to Tree Hugger, conservationists working with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust expect that, unless something is soon done, elephants will only be around for about 12 more years.

These greenheads explain that, as several reports have shown, the year 2012 witnessed the slaughter of about 36,000 African elephants.

The rate equivalent for this number indicates that one elephant was killed every 15 minutes.

“A world without elephants is hard to comprehend, but it is a real possibility. Against a submachine gun or poacher armed with a spear, they stand little chance,” Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick told the press on behalf of the Trust.

The conservationists argue that, if elephants are to stand a chance of escaping extinction, people must quit purchasing ivory products.

“Buying ivory only serves to fuel a trade which results in more senseless deaths of these beautiful animals,” Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick believes.
