Tigers are listed as an endangered species, so it need not come as a surprise that conservationists and biodiversity enthusiasts were saddened to hear that one such feline has recently died in India. More so since its death was no accident.

On the contrary, Times of India tells us that the tigress was killed by an electric trap that shocked it to death and that was most likely set in place by poachers operating in the Bandgavgarh National Park.

The big cat's body was discovered early on Monday morning, and the people who found the corpse estimate that the tigress came too close to the electric trap and was killed by it on Sunday night.

The dead feline was removed from the wild, and information shared with the public says that, under National Tiger Conservation Authority orders, an autopsy is to soon be carried out.

Authorities in India explain that, over the past two years, poachers operating in this part of the world have killed a total of four females belonging to this species.

As is the case with elephants and rhinos, illegal hunters target these felines, kill them and then butcher them. Various animal body parts obtained in this manner are then sold on the black market, as many people think them to have medicinal value.
