Matt Firor, the game director of The Elder Scrolls Online, says that the success that the Elder Scrolls franchise has had in the action role-playing genre will help the launch of the MMO based on the same game universe.

Players who have already enjoyed a single-player title in the series will know exactly what to expect and will be able to quickly learn the extra mechanics while enjoying the familiar elements.

The game director tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “It is a crowded space, but this is Elder Scrolls. One of things of having a huge IP like Elder Scrolls is it cuts through the noise. It’s safe to say – looking at the lines for people to play – that everyone knows about it.”

He adds, “That is the first step to getting a lot of people into the game. Part of the crowded landscape is it’s hard to get your message out there. When you say ‘Elder Scrolls’, we don’t have a problem getting the message out, which helps us immensely.”

The Elder Scrolls Online takes players back 1,000 years in the history of the universe and creates a scenario where three main factions are battling for supremacy in Tamriel, while also seeking to stop the efforts of a Daedra to dominate the world.

The lore of the game is important to developers at ZeniMax Online because it will allow the team to draw in single-player fans and familiarize them with the MMO mechanics.

In order to ease the transition, the game will feature a first-person mode that will be similar to that seen in the very successful The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

ZeniMax Online will also try to deliver an action-driven experience and make meaningful player choices.

The Elder Scrolls Online is expected to arrive later during the year exclusively on the PC.
