Gamers will see no changes to their characters once the process is done

The development team at ZeniMax Online and publisher Bethesda announce that they are ready to move the entire population of the European megaserver for The Elder Scrolls Online to an entirely new datacenter starting at 1 PM Greenwich Mean Time on July 30.

The operation is expected to be completed by 10 PM GMT, and the two companies are saying that during the period only the European infrastructure will be affected, but gamers will still have access to the North American megaserver, the account site and the forums of the MMO.

ZeniMax Online makes it clear that no changes to the characters will be made during the datacenter switch and that no patch will be launched for the title at the same time.

In the official announcement, the studio also states, “Moving everything over to our new datacenter is a complex operation involving a large number of our engineers and support staff in Europe and North America. It’s important to us that everyone we need for the process is awake, ready, and available. This will help us make the transition as smooth as possible.”

ZeniMax Online adds, “We’re looking forward to the move and are doing everything we can to make sure your characters arrive safely in the Frankfurt database. See you there!”

The company is not saying whether it is planning a similar move for the North American megaserver of The Elder Scrolls Online or when such a process might take place.

The MMO has been receiving weekly maintenance periods since it was launched, so players should be able to handle the upcoming downtime associated with the datacenter move, especially given that it will result in improved game performance.

The title was introduced on the PC earlier in the year, and versions for the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony are also in development, although there are no plans to introduce cross-platform play.

The Elder Scrolls Online allows gamers to enter the complex world of the series, one thousand years before the single-player titles, in order to choose a race and then join an alliance which is fighting to control as much of Tamriel as possible while confronting powerful undead armies led by a Daedra.

The game uses a monthly subscription business model, which is almost extinct in the MMO world, and some reports, which have not been confirmed by Bethesda, are claiming that the player population has been in rapid decline in the last few weeks.
