Eiji Aonuma, the series producer working on The Legend of Zelda, says that the recently announced A Link to the Past 2 has been in development at Nintendo since 2011, when his team decided to take the entire franchise in a new direction.

The developer is quoted by Siliconera as saying during a Miiverse-focused event that, “The day we’ll be seeing the successor is still further ahead, but for those of you who wish to contribute or show your support, please comment on the Wii U The Legend of Zelda series community.”

The new game is set to launch exclusively on the Nintendo 3Ds handheld in the fall and will use the unique features of the device.

The team has not yet offered details on gameplay or story, but a video of A Link to the Past 2 in action is available.
