Francis Ford Coppola, often dubbed one of the greatest directors of all times, is now working on a movie, somewhat of a secret project. Based on a short story by Coppola himself, on a script by Coppola, “Twixt” promises to be as enchanting as it’s eerie.

The first official trailer for it has just been released, and you can see it in full below, embedded at the end of the article.

“Twixt” tells the story of a washed-up mystery writer, a sub-par Stephen King, Hall Baltimore, played by a chubby, pony-tailed, desolate-looking Val Kilmer.

On one of his promo tours, he ends up in a small town, where he meets a sheriff willing to share with him a story about a serial killer in the area, which he (the sheriff) would like to see turned into Baltimore’s next novel.

“There was once upon a time, a town not far from the big city. A road ran through it but it was a town of those who wanted to be left alone,” Tom Waits says in the voiceover in the trailer.

The film combines 3D with 2D footage to present two worlds, that of dreams and reality. In the former, Baltimore crossed paths with a ghost called V (Elle Fanning, most recently seen in “Super 8”) and the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe (Ben Chaplin).

To say that the narrative gets weirder with each minute would probably be an understatement, judging from the trailer alone.

Slash Film notes that Coppola also brought some footage from “Twixt” to Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego, but it wasn’t included in the trailer below. Still, it was more than enough to get fans of a good tale of mystery and horror going.

“Twixt” comes out at an unspecified date in 2011, or perhaps early in 2012. To get an idea of what to expect from it – and to see whether it’s worth the waiting – check out the trailer below.
