People say the figure was a sign that last week's volcanic eruption was the gods' way to punish people

Last Wednesday, April 22, the Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted and produced a massive column of ash and dust. In turn, this column of volcanic material birthed a mammoth cloud hovering over the country's southern regions.

The eruption began at about 6 p.m. local time. Shortly after, local authorities ordered that people living within a 20-kilometer (12.5-mile) radius of the volcano be evacuated.

On the day of the eruption, 33-year-old Hariet Grunewald, a woman living in a small town near the Calbuco volcano, chanced to see a human-like figure forming high up in the sky.

The figure, a photo of which is available below, was formed by the column of ash and dust coming from deep inside the Calbuco volcano and soaring into the sky.

“At first I thought perhaps it was just me who could see him. But when I showed my friends and family they all agreed,” the 33-year-old said in an interview, as cited by The Inquisitr.

Since it's not that often that volcanoes form human-like figures, some believe that this apparition in Chile was a sign from the gods and their way of letting them know the eruption was their work.

“An erupting volcano is God’s way of showing he is unhappy. This smoke man is probably a message that He is keeping a watch on us and our behavior,” explained an elderly woman named Juanma Ortiz Arrendondo.
