Indie developers Midgar Studio launched a crowdfunding campaign for their upcoming open-world Japanese-inspired role-playing game, Edge of Eternity.

The campaign is doing very well, having secured 80 percent of its goal at the time of writing, with 33 more days to go.

Edge of Eternity is a non-linear role-playing game that's described as a tribute to the JRPG classics, as well as a modern incarnation of all the core concepts. The game is set in a universe that blends fantasy and science fiction, and also has kitten mounts.

Edge of Eternity has been in development for over a year, and now its crowdfunding campaign is live on Kickstarter.

The game aims to offered a new take on the genre, using the Active Time Battle system and advanced character customization, while also introducing a number of western game design influences.

The combat system is quite polarizing, as there are many people who dislike it and have grown tired of playing the same types of battles since the heyday of NES, but hopefully the team's twist on it will be enough to make it more appealing.

An interesting concept

Edge of Eternity is set to offer gamers an open-world experience with a non-linear storyline to follow, with branching scenarios, and an original weapons evolution system.

In addition to the team's own enthusiasm and ideas, the game project will also benefit from a great soundtrack, with none other than Xenogears and Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda being in charge of its score, if the respective stretch goal is met.

There is also a playable demo of the game in its pre-alpha state for you to try out if you're considering pledging, showcasing the studio's objectives and the work accomplished so far. The demo is available on the Kickstarter page, compatible with Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux.

The team also intends to release Edge of Eternity on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 home consoles, should the stretch goals be met.
