Mortal Kombat series' creator, Ed Boon, has confirmed in a recent interview that their plans to make a real next-gen Mortal Kombat series of games are starting to become reality, reassuring that the next Mortal Kombat title is going to be different from top to bottom, featuring more characters than ever, and new features making it more realistic than anything that currently exists out there, in the genre.
As a total Mortal Kombat fan,
the piece up on gamesradar.com kind of misled me into believing that Boon was talking about taking all the MK installments in the series to shape them up into next-gen games: "Midway has reaffirmed plans to deliver a 'next generation' version of long-running series Mortal Kombat in a recent financial report." That "'Next-generation' version" kind of tricked me, but moving on to read the whole piece, Boon's words confirmed that this was not the case, as the man was definitely talking about the same
dirty and gritty new MK title he mentioned back in April, this year.
As you will see in the lines to follow, Boon clearly reveals that the new title is being built from the ground up, adding nothing but new stuff to the franchise:
"The only thing I can say at the moment is we are going to do a reset, we're going to throw everything from the previous Mortal Kombats, we're going to start from scratch and try to introduce as many new characters as possible, new features, new stuff like that and take advantage of the amazing presentation, graphics that all of a sudden you can do, things that are a lot more real", he explained.
Sometimes I wonder though: has anyone even bothered asking the series' true fans whether they want a change or not? I for one would give an arm and a leg for a next gen version of one of the first three installments in the series. Not necessarily 2D, maybe even throw in a couple of secret characters to choose or fight against, new arenas to fight in etc., in order to let the true Mortal Kombat spirit make a comeback. MK 4 was the last in the series that still had that one-of-a-kind MK spirit, if you ask me.
Then again, nobody IS asking me, so I should just shut up now. Boon also mentioned that the soonest they'll be able to share a few details about the new next-gen "version" of the series is probably early 2008: "...I would imagine we probably wouldn't start talking about it until the beginning of 2008 maybe... There's a lot of work, there's a lot of work that we're doing. The next-gen systems are so much work, it's overwhelming."
We know, we know... Especially for the PS3, I guess. I hope that Sony delivers all
the tools so we can all enjoy Boon's face-lifted MK series.
