Might come before the year's end

Google was reported a while back to be working on multi-touch support for its Android operating system, and some details on this feature were unveiled at the Google I/O developers conference this year, yet nothing specific on when the functionality would come to the market emerged. Enthusiasts certainly can hardly wait for this to come on their Android-based handsets, and it seems that their wait might finally come to an end.

Apparently the upcoming Android 2.0 operating system, which should surface under the name of Eclair, might sport the multi-touch feature, or at least this is what Cnet suggests. Google is already readying an update for the OS, codenamed Donut, which should come as a minor update, it seems, while all the goodies are reportedly on their way to users along with Eclair, the next Android flavor.

In case this pans out and Android 2.0 indeed comes this year, upcoming mobile phones that will run under it, including the already rumored and spec'd Motorola Sholes and Morrison, as well as the HTC Click, HTC Fiesta and others, might sport multi-touch capabilities. Some of the Android-phone makers around the world have already packed their devices with multi-touch capabilities, yet this time around the feature should come officially straight from the source, Google.

Other goodies might also be included in Eclair, such as handwriting recognition, something that the recently rumored Dell Android device was also reported to sport. In addition, users might also see support for Adobe's Flash Player, as well as text-to-speech APIs and more. Indeed, Android 2.0 sounds like a great improvement over the previous versions of the platform, and might also help the OS gain more market share on its competition against already established platforms, such as Symbian and Windows Mobile.
