Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future is a videogame developed by Appaloosa Interactive Corp. and published by SEGA Enterprises Ltd. The game was launched for the PlayStation 2 home console from Sony and for SEGA’s Dreamcast in June 2000. It can be classed as an action title with some science fiction influences and can be played from a third person perspective, featuring ecology-oriented educational elements.

It puts the player in the middle of a vision of the far future where humans and dolphins, the second most intelligent species on Earth, have managed to develop a symbiotic bond and live together sharing the resources required for each of them to survive. Both human and dolphin spaceship crews are exploring the known galaxy while the marine species also acts as a caretaker for Earth, protecting it from any damage.

In deep space, a threat looms. It's known only as the Foe and his aim is to destroy the blissful existence of humans and dolphins. He succeeded in attacking Earth and altering history, thus the sole salvation is to send one of the most intelligent dolphins, named Ecco, back in time to set the flow of time right.

There are more than 25 unique underwater environments that can be explored as Ecco communicates with other creatures and manipulates the world around him in order to undo the damage Foe inflicted.
