An international collaboration of scientists, including Swedish experts from the Umeå University, found in a new study that eating fish can go a long way towards protecting people from heart attacks.

The group warns that people should avoid fish that is heavily polluted, especially if mercury is involved. Unfortunately, finding fish that are not contaminated with this chemical is becoming increasingly difficult, AlphaGalileo reports.

What the research was focused on was determining whether the risks of mercury contamination are outweighed by the advantages of fatty acids, a group of compounds that are very beneficial to human health. Provided that the fish are not too contaminated, the answer is yes.

Details of the new investigation appear in the latest issue of the esteemed American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN).
