Apple has posted a new Support document online, outlining that buyers of the company's newly updated Xserves should make sure they have the latest software updates installed for a good experience. Appropriately titled “Xserve (Early 2009): Use the latest version of Server Admin Tools,” the knowledge base article says that Early 2009 Xserve users must install Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1, a software update released two days ago by Apple.

On Apple's Support section, the document reads:

Summary

Be sure to use the latest version of the Server Admin Tools, especially Server Monitor 1.7 or later, when administering an Xserve (Early 2009).

Products Affected

Xserve (Early 2009), Server Monitor.

Install the Server Admin Tools from the disk included with the Xserve (Early 2009) or download Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1. The Server Admin Tools require Mac OS X v10.5.6 or higher.

For those who aren't very familiar with the Server Admin Tools, release 10.5.6 version 1.1 is required to administer Mac OS X Server version 10.5.6 from a remote Mac client. The Server Admin Tools are available as a manual download, and as an automatic Software Update for Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.6 with version 10.5 or later of the Server Admin Tools already installed. The Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1 require the latest version of Mac OS X currently available – 10.5.6.

The Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1 (affecting Mac OS X Server 10.5, and Server Admin) deliver several improvements, including those bundled with Server Admin Tools 10.5.3 and Server Admin Tools 10.5.5. Additionally, the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1 bring enhancements to System Image Utility and Server Admin. According to Apple, when deploying a system image created from a volume, the target computers will no longer have identical local KDC files, thanks to the new update. The Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1 also add NetBoot/NetInstall model filters for the latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air computers.

As for the Server Admin issues, the release fixes a problem that could cause Server Admin to stop responding when propagating permissions on a folder that is on a volume other than the boot volume. In this area too, the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 v1.1 add NetBoot/NetInstall model filters for the aforementioned portable computers.
