EVGA has recently unveiled its latest addition to the company's motherboard lineup, the EVGA X58 SLI, which, as the name suggests, has been designed to support Intel's latest processor, dubbed Core i7. The most interesting features this fresh mobo comes with are its overclocking capabilities, which are said to be able to match those sported by ASUS' gaming boards.

The new EVGA X58 motherboard comes with nice BIOS enhancements and features able to make happy even some of the most demanding overclokers. We're talking here about an “Extreme OC” option available with that BIOS, which can be set in case someone plans to boot up below minus 50 degrees. This option is expected to prevent cold bugging, and provide specific vDroop control and even things like PWM frequency adjustment that can offer a better power response.

Nevertheless, the MOSFETs will have to support more heat and stress in case the option is used. On the other hand, EVGA is known for providing excellent warranty and support, especially to users in the United States. Even so, there might be some limits to EVGA's motherboards following extreme overclocking attempts.

The fact is that EVGA's ex-EpoX team includes the Singaporean overclocking guru Shamino, which worked for Foxconn's Quantum Force department as well. Together, they were able to find new development directions, and the fresh board is able to give a headache to ASUS' Rampage II Extreme, which is known to be a great overclocker. In stores, EVGA's board seems to be a little cheaper, yet it also includes less features compared to ASUS' RoG board, which means that it has less chances to appeal to users.

The battle for a top position seems to be fiercer these days, as quite a few motherboard manufacturers announced launching new hardware and expect to gain market share. Besides ASUS, we've spotted boards from Gigabyte, DFI, MSI and others as well, with brand new OC features. All that we would need is for a new overclocking event to take place to let us know which of these motherboards performs better.
