ESET has completed development of the first public release of NOD32 Antivirus 8 beta, so Windows users who can’t wait until the final product hits the shelves can give it a try free of charge right now.

Both ESET Smart Security and NOD32 Antivirus have been updated and pushed to version 8 beta, but the number of improvements isn’t as big as you would expect.

Part of the “new generation” security products, as ESET calls it, Smart Security 8 Beta comes with new botnet protection said to “shield your computer from abuse as part of a criminally-controlled network.” At the same time, the new enhanced exploit blocker module protects your data against exploits, including those for Java.

It’s a well-known fact that Java is one of the most vulnerable software solutions out there, so this particular improvement could really come in handy to many users out there who have no other option than to run Java, but still want to remain completely secure.

There are some requirements for this new beta, as you can read below, but the good news is that Windows XP is still among the supported operating systems for now. Here are the full system requirements mentioned by ESET:

Processors Supported: Intel or AMD x86-x64 Operating Systems: Microsoft Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP SP3+ 32-bit, XP SP2+ 64-bit

Since it’s a beta, it’s only natural to expect to come across a number of bugs, and ESET says that some known issues have already been found. Here’s a small list with three of the glitches that you could find:

• EGUI (sometimes also OS) hangs up for Interactive HIPS mode • HIPS: Edit rule window not fully displayed after enabling/disabling and modifying • Expired TRIAL/Beta license restricts product functionality

As far as security is concerned, ESET NOD32 Antivirus 8 and Smart Security should provide the same high level of protection to users, as the company guarantees that the malware detection and removal engine has also received some improvements to be more effective and be lighter on system resources.

If you’re curious to find out what these two new software solutions are up to, just click the download links below to download and install them on your computer. Keep in mind however that they’re still in the beta development stage, so a number of issues and performance problems could still exist.
