Astronauts share their experiences on the famous Russian spacecraft

Experts with the European Space Agency (ESA) recently published a new YouTube video explaining how the famous Russian-built Soyuz space capsules work, from the moment they undock from the International Space Station to the instant they land in Kazakhstan.

Though thought by many to be a vestige of a time long-passed, the fact remains that the Soyuz capsules the Russian Federal Space Agency (RosCosmos) uses to reach the orbital lab are the safest vehicles for manned spaceflight ever developed. They have not produced deaths during missions to date, and are used by American, European, Canadian and Russian astronauts alike.

The video above shows the two types of undocking that the Soyuz can perform, highlights the procedures the spacecraft goes through as it prepares to enter the atmosphere, and then provides a walkthrough of the procedures that eventually end up with a so-called soft landing on the Kazakh steppe.

For another few years still, the small and cramped Soyuz will remain humanity's only way of reaching the ISS and low-Earth orbit. Any comments and thoughts on the performances of these space capsules are much appreciated. Just leave them in the comments section below.
