The fifth edition of the ESA Earth Observation Summer School is held this month in ESRIN, the European Space Agency's Center for Earth observation, in Frascati, Italy.

During this edition, students will have the opportunity to present their own work, listen to several lectures concerning global climate change and exercising on the processing of Earth observation data with the aid of specialists on computer-based learning.

At this Summer School are taking part seventy-four students chosen between 243 applicants according to their motivation and educational qualifications, mainly PhD students and young post-doctoral researchers.

Until August 13th participants will have the chance of familiarizing with Earth observation from space and they will be treating various subjects from remote sensing principles to their practical application.

Students will attend to lectures on Earth system modeling and data absorption, on remote sensing related issues and they will process Earth observation data on practical computing exercises.

During the eleven days of Summer School, students can present their individual work in daily poster sessions and have the other participants select the three best posters for awards from the European Meteorological Society.

As lectures and students stay in the same hotel, they have the chance of interacting with each other, discuss the the state of the global change and exchanging points of view and experience so that students can form a contact network than would help them with their future careers.

The hosting hotel is a former cardinal's residence that was built on the ruins of the ancient summer home of Cicero, the Roman philosopher and statesman, on the hills dominating Frascati and Rome.

The ESA Center for Earth Observation, ESRIN, is one of the five ESA centers in Europe, located in the small town of Frascati, 20 km south of Rome.

The center was first established in 1996 but actually began acquiring data from environmental satellites in the '70s.

The closing ceremony of the Summer School will include the awards for the best posters and will be transmitted in live stream on the ESRIN website.
