14 DAY TRIAL // Usually, when overclocking a computer, it's often enough to just equip the CPU and/or graphics card with a better than average cooling module. When really going overboard, though, water cooling can be the only way to go.
We are, of course, making abstraction of those absurdly ambitious overclocking sessions where people push the CPU beyond all reasonable limits and then some.
In those cases, only liquid nitrogen or helium can really stem the odds of overheating, burning, and/or processor meltdown. Testers usually have to rig the coolant pails and tape them to the motherboard somehow, then periodically pour the coolant into them.
The new product we're talking to talk about is for people who don't quite intend to go so far. Who, instead, want to overclock their systems better than average and keep them that way for a long time.
Behold the EK-FB KIT GA Z97X-SOC Force full-board water block kit, which Ljubljana-based premium liquid cooling gear manufacturer EK Water Blocks made for the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC Force overclocking motherboard.
It is composed of two water blocks. One of them covers the power regulation module, also known as voltage regulation module (VRM / MOSFETs). The other one is placed on top of the southbridge, or PCH as it is otherwise known.
That's the thing with motherboard coolers. They need to be designed specifically for each mainboard, because platforms have various PCB parts laid out differently. You can't just make them “universal” like CPU coolers, where a different mounting kit can compensate for the CPU socket.
The bases of the blocks are made of nickel-plated electrolytic copper, while the top can be made of Acrylic glass or POM Acetal. This is a habit that EK has decided to adopt: releasing the same product in several versions, for little to no price difference.
You can go with the fully opaque option or buy a transparent block that will let you enjoy the view, so to speak. Good if, say, you've bought Pastel-Colored Coolant or something along those lines.
