The ColorEdge displays use IPS technology and will do well in photography and video design

The ColorEdge series of displays from EIZO is well known among professional photographers and video editors, so it's no surprise that the company would stick the brand on its two latest displays.

What is surprising is that the newcomers are almost completely alike, save for their calibration sensors, or lack thereof.

The ColorEdge CX241 needs to be color-calibrated with an external calibration sensor, but has an internal correction sensor that maintains the calibration results.

The ColorEdge CG247 has a built-in calibration sensor, allowing it to self-calibrate instead of depending on standalone equipment, even though the professional photographers, post-production crews and prepress workers probably own one due to the specific of their jobs.

The native resolution of both is 1920 x 1200 pixels, meaning that they utilize the 16:10 aspect ratio, instead of cinematic 16:9 (1920 x 1080 pixels).

They also have 16-bit look-up tables and the ability to display more than one billion colors at once over DisplayPort (10-bit display).

Speaking of connectors, EIZO's ColorEdge CG247 and CX241 have DisplayPort, HDMi and DVI inputs, for broad compatibility. They also have four USB connectors, two upstream ones and two downstream ones.

Then, there's the “stable brightness chromaticity” and the ability to set tone characteristics seven minutes after powering on. It's a feature that professional photo editors will appreciate. The Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE) technology (which ensures brightness and color uniformity) will help there too.

Furthermore, the newcomers have stands with tilt, swivel and height adjustment, even portrait mode support.

All in all, not bad for 24.1-inch LCDs powered by IPS technology. EIZo has even implemented a cloud-based solution that centralizes color management for all ColorEdge monitors, reducing maintenance costs and the time it takes to calibrate displays if, say, a company has a bunch of different image experts in its employ.

All it needs is to link the PCs to the network and the ColorNavigator Network will do the rest (you'll need ColorNavigator NX installed on the PCs for it to work).

EIZO will start shipping the ColorEdge CG247 and CX241 soon, if it hasn't already, for prices that haven't been disclosed yet.

Because the ColorEdge CG247 has a 3D LUT (look-up table) that individually adjusts color on an RGB cubic table, it might cost a fair bit more than the other 24-inch LCD. The 3D LUT “applies a film look to the image so creators can preview how the image will be seen by their audience” when using ColorNavigator NX and ColorNavigator 6 software emulation.
