On Thursday, UK mobile phone carrier EE has officially confirmed plans to provide users with 4G LTE connectivity even when they are in the Channel Tunnel.

The company plans on making the service available for users by the summer, but it will deliver 2G and 3G connectivity before that.

In fact, the wireless operator has confirmed that these connectivity options will be up and running in the North Running Tunnel (UK to France) in March 2014.

This should prove a great option to all those who travel through the Channel Tunnel. According to the carrier, their number raises to as much as 20 million each year, as people are using either the Eurotunnel shuttle in their cars or lorries, or on a Eurostar train.

For those out of the loop, we should note that going from the UK to France represents a 35-minute underground journey, which is about to get much better for commuting business workers and holidaymakers.

With access to the wireless carrier’s 4GEE network, users will be able to prepare meetings, check their emails, plan traveling routes, watch movies, or simply research for a holiday destination.

“We’re proud to offer customers a superfast 4G service when they’re travelling from the UK into Europe. It’s another technology first for EE, and it’s one that will make a big difference to business workers and people going away on holiday,” EE CTO Fotis Karonis said.

“Being connected is such an important part of travelling now and this will be another route we’ve covered with 4G, making a huge difference to millions of customers who can now make the most of their journey time.”

In addition to EE customers (including those on Orange and T-Mobile), Vodafone’s customers will also be able to take advantage of connectivity in the Channel Tunnel, as their wireless carrier has also announced plans to launch services for them, telegraph.co.uk reports.
