Valve boss Gabe Newell has emphasized the degree of freedom possible on its Steam Machines computers, exemplifying it by saying that users can certainly install other digital distribution services, like EA's Origin.

The Steam Machines initiative promises to deliver a wide array of computers geared towards gaming in the living room, with small cases and a lot of power designed to play games using the SteamOS operating system and Steam service.

Even so, users are free to do whatever they want with the Steam Machines computers, including installing other operating systems or digital distribution services.

While talking with fans on Reddit, Valve boss Gabe Newell even used this example to highlight how open the computers will be.

"We're trying to make it as open as possible. If EA wants to put Origin on it, that would be fine."

The first Steam Machines are set to launch later this year, while prototypes have already been sent to beta testers around the U.S.
