Blizzard isn't too worried though

We have recently reported that Electronic Arts, with its BioWare studio and LucasArts, the owner of the Star Wars Intellectual Property, have teamed up to offer a new MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) based on the very successful normal RPG series Knight Of The Old Republic, (KOTOR).

This new game, entitled Star Wars: The Old Republic, will be something very different in the MMO market. Although the title doesn't even have a release date, the developers are very optimistic about the success it will have. Recently, representatives of the two companies involved, EA and LucasArts, have spoken with VideoGaming247 about how this game will take on the current market leader in the field of MMORPGs, Blizzard's World of Warcraft.

"When World of Warcraft came out, everybody thought, ‘No, the market is only this big, because that’s as big as EverQuest was.’ Blizzard showed that it could be much larger. Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience. Plus, we have the benefit of this huge brand, which has done very, very well for nearly 30 years," said Tom Nichols, a LucasArts executive.

He then went on to say that, in his opinion, Star Wars: The Old Republic definitely had a chance at winning the upcoming battle with Blizzard's very successful game, which has a record of 11 million paying subscribers.

"I think this game has that potential, with a premiere developer behind it; with a clear differentiating feature being story and something that’s very compelling, and being a feature that’s true to BioWare’s expertise as well as the Star Wars brand; plus the power of the Star Wars brand, which is still doing very, very well 30 years after it started," he said.

This game really has a lot of attributes that might make it very popular, but WoW is a very tough opponent, which surely won't go down without a fight. Only time will tell if this currently under development title will succeed.
