Rock Band is not enough

The music game genre has seen a boom in popularity and profit in the last couple of years as more and more companies have begun to exploit this previously forgotten market. With franchises such as Guitar Hero or Rock Band achieving record sales, it's only natural that other companies would want to get onto this new money train that keeps on going despite the worldwide recession.

But although we've seen companies like Nintendo attempt to enter the market, nobody would expect a publisher that is already very much present in the genre to attempt new things. However, that is exactly what Electronic Arts wants to do, as its chief operating officer, John Pleasants, has declared that his company has a few plans and projects underway.

“When we look back five years, the fantasy of being a rock star by punching the buttons that are flowing down the screen is going to be one implementation in what is going to be a very large category,” said Pleasants. “There are lots of other things you can do with music, and we're working on interesting things, and we know our competition is working on interesting things.”

But for those of you who don't know, EA is already making a pretty big profit by helping with the publishing of MTV Games' Rock Band series, so it seems that the company is bent on making even more money from its own projects and not share the profit with other corporations.

While the statement made by Pleasants means that the music genre isn't going to lose its momentum, he declined to make any comments on what ideas may or may not be implemented in said projects. Hopefully we'll see some concrete statements in the near future or at least some rumors that might hint at the things the EA team has been working on.
