It is much lighter and thinner than existing e-paper, but just as clear and efficient

Electronic paper, electrophoretic displays as it were, are E Ink's specialty, and the company has finally launched a new model, called E Ink Fina. It's surprising that it came out really, seeing as how the last revamp was in September, so pretty recently.

Then again, the E Ink Fina is not so much a better display as it is a lighter and more efficient version of the existing technology.

Which is to say, it's got some advantages without losing any of the assets it already possessed, including readability.

A very thin glass substrate is responsible for the new advantage. The previous E-paper screens used normal glass. Well, as normal as display glass can be at any rate.

For those who want to know the technical details, E Ink Fina is a 13.3-inch screen with a weight of 60 grams / 2.11 ounces.

The PocketBook CAD Reader is the first device to use the screen. It is the first Fina-enabled device for displaying Autodesk’s Autocad drawings.

“Our goal was to develop a device to be used on construction sites. We created a highly portable large format display device with a rugged and weatherproof case that could hold all the CAD drawings a team needs,” said PocketBook’s head of R&D Dmitriy Shemet.

“This makes designs available virtually any place and any time. We chose the E Ink Fina 13.3 inch display because it has exactly the right properties we were looking for to develop PocketBook CAD Reader.”

There will be Fina screens of different size, and they will probably be showcased alongside the CAD Reader at an event in Las Vegas, on December 5. Either that or they'll make it to CES 2013 (Consumer Electronics Show). Probably.

Amazon might have a Kindle based on it in the works too, though we haven't heard anything about it yet.
