E Ink corporation, a specialist in electronic paper display technology, recently announced that they developed an imaging film that doubles refresh speeds
and boosts brightness by 20 percent. The new Vizplex display technology comes as an effort to improve the slow refresh and the low contrast offered by their current devices.

E Ink also joined forces with PrimeView International (PVI), which is the only active matrix EPD producer, to make TFT modules built with Vizplex in an a expanded size range of products that includes 1.9-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch and 9.7-inch diagonal displays (compared to the previous 6-inch format that was only targeted at E-books).

E Ink is also introducing a new "Metronome Display Controller", a low-power chip which supports more sizes and resolutions as well as added gray scale depth and lower-level control over the display. The chip is designed for better integration with the host processor and memory. Furthermore, E ink said they will continue to keep the parallel-port Apollo controller that will offer ease of integration for rapid prototyping.

The new prototype developer kits will be available this summer and they will probably be targeted at monochrome apps like cellphones, MP3 players, PC accessories, smart hand-held devices, signage, electronic, dictionaries, tablets and of course, E-books.

"E ink continues to be at the forefront of the electronic paper revolution. This is a major improvement because the electronic ink in the imaging film switches twice as fast and the image is 20 percent brighter", said Russ Wilcox, president and CEO of E ink in a statement.
