Dyslexic Readers Get Special Font in Instapaper iOS 4.2.7 [Updated]

Marco Arment is out with a new version of his popular offline reading app, Instapaper. Version 4.2.7 brings a few noteworthy additions, including a new font for customers affected by dyslexia.

Instapaper iOS 4.2.7 adds Netbot and Notesy to the Share panel, fixes an annoying "white-screen" bug and issues with Contacts access in Find Friends under iOS 6. It also addresses 1-pixel misalignment of filled circles in the page indicator.

Most importantly, though, the new Instapaper adds a special font for dyslexic readers.

Instapaper requires iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) or iPad. It's also compatible with iOS 5.0 or later. The app is optimized for iPhone 5 use.

Tthe opendyslexic font is a copy of the earlier and very similar Dyslexie font designed by studiostudio.nl after extensive research. The Dyslexie font was the subject of the University of Twente study article “Special Font For Dyslexia?”

The authors of opendyslexic are facing a loophole in the United States copyright law that allows application developers to include the font in their software. In Europe, however, it’s frowned upon.

As such, since December 7th, 2012, Instapaper has ceased to use opendyslexic in their app and has chosen to switch to Dyslexie in all versions – including 4.2.7.
